Get a long lasting, high quality paint finish by responsibly taking care of your paint
If you spend the money on getting a high quality paint finish for your home, make sure that it last as long as it can and looks its best by taking care of it. Please read below for techniques and tips on how to ensure your paint lasts.
Caring for your interior paint job You've taken the time to make your home look the way you want it, and with effective cleaning you can make sure it stays that way!
However, there are a few rules and guidelines to go by. Don't wash your paint job until four weeks after its finish, never wash vigorously and always test your washing methods in a small, inconspicuous place to make sure you are not damaging your paint. Please read below for an effective washing plan:
- When using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner Concentrate dilute with water before use: light 1:60; medium 1:50 and; heavy 1:40. With Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner Ready to Use no dilution is required.
- Use a soft lint free cloth. Never saturate as this leads to running and streaking. When using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner directly spray onto surface.
- Use light strokes and thoroughly wipe the area. Wipe away excess solution and wring the cloth into an empty bucket before dipping the cloth into the solutio again.
- Achieve an even finish b drying in one final wipe with a dry lint-free cloth.
Cleaning your home's exterior paintwork Your exterior paint job can gain dirt from airborne contaminants such as salt deposits. Moss and lichen can also get into your paint and reduce its quality significantly.
To get an instantly fresh appearance, use Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted as recommended in water. Using this regularly helps to prevent serious damage.
However, for a slower acting and long term clean, Resene Deep Clean can be a huge help. This is great for busy people who don't have the time to reguarly clean their home.
Again, as with interior paint, wait four weeks before cleaning your paint.
General paint care guidelines There are a lot of different problems that paint can face, but with effective measures you can ensure that your paint job is well prepared and looked after.
Surfactant leaching: This is noticeable in your paint from white streaks, giving a watermark effect to your paint. It can often not be predicted or prevented and doesn't hinder your paint's durability - only its appearance. It is a result of water sitting on freshly applied waterborne paints. To prevent this, avoid applying paint in the afternoon when cold, damp conditions are expected.
Pigment transfer: Bright colours, such as reds, are especially vulnerable to pigment transfer. It does not effect the durability or appearance of your paint, but can cause marks on other items, such as furniture and clothes. If this has happened, wipe the affected area with a cloth or use a glaze coat such as Resene Multishield+.
Fading: All exterior paints are prone to fading from UV rays, however Resene uses the finest pigments commercially available to prevent this. For added protection, a coat of Resene Sun Defier UV protective glaze can be applied to freshly painted bright organic hues and shades.
Excess Moisture: Moisture is a huge enemy to your paint finish as it is generated from inside and outside your home. Moisture can be reduced through dehumidifiers or ventilated aluminium windows.
When applying your paint it is important to keep good ventilation. Open windows and the use of heaters to warm the airflow are recommended.
Blocking: Thermoplastic paints (most waterborne paints fall into this category) often soften under heat. Because of this, always be careful with what you put up to your paintwork, especially vinyl. Vinyl is prone to migration into touching surfaces and will reduce the quality of your paint.
